Mitch Johnson disputes Spurs’ All-Star count

The San Antonio coach believes De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle deserved selection. With a 37-16 record, the Spurs only have one All-Star in Victor Wembanyama.

Mitch Johnson didn’t mince words before San Antonio Spurs‘s 136-108 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night. The Spurs coach openly criticized the All-Star Game selections, believing his team deserved more representatives given their performance this season.

Statistics that make the case for Fox and Castle

« I find it very interesting that De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle were not named All-Stars, » Johnson stated during his pre-game press conference. « So I’m going to answer that question that wasn’t asked. But seven teams in this league have multiple All-Stars, and we’ve played pretty well against many of the best teams in this league. »

The numbers certainly support the Texas coach’s argument. Fox, a former All-Star, is averaging 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game this season. Stephon Castle is posting averages of 17.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 7.0 assists, while establishing himself as one of the most tenacious perimeter defenders in the league.

These criticisms come just hours after the nomination of Brandon Ingram of the Raptors to replace the injured Stephen Curry Ingram, who joins teammate Scottie Barnes at the All-Star Game, is averaging 22.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.

Flawless logic around Wembanyama MVP

With a 37-16 record, San Antonio has the third-best NBA record and the best among teams with only one All-Star in Victor Wembanyama. Johnson actually used this situation to support his theory about the Frenchman’s MVP chances.

« Nothing taken away from everyone who was named an All-Star, because they have a lot of great players, » the coach clarified. « But the only way I can conceive that we deserve [only] one All-Star is that there must be an awful lot of people who consider Victor Wembanyama as one of the frontrunners for MVP. So thanks for asking. »

This media statement reflects the growing confidence within the Texas organization, which sees its legitimate playoff ambitions materializing faster than expected.
