Collin Sexton experienced an evening he would probably rather forget. The Chicago Bulls guard was fined $35,000 by the NBA for making an obscene gesture during the 123-115 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night. An unexpected and surreal sequence that quickly went viral on social media.
The incident occurred with 1:31 remaining in the third quarter. After missing his first free throw, Sexton made the second before staring at the rim and giving it the middle finger while backing away. A gesture of frustration caught on camera that perfectly symbolizes the player’s difficult evening, finishing with 21 points but only 7 made field goals on 18 attempts.

A Difficult Adjustment for the Bulls’ New Acquisition
This fine comes in a particular context for Sexton, who was playing only his second game in a Bulls uniform. The former Charlotte Hornets player was traded before the deadline in a deal involving Coby White and Mike Conley Jr. Since arriving in Chicago, he has averaged 19.0 points and 4.0 rebounds with 40.6% shooting coming off the bench.
This $35,000 fine adds to the Bulls’ struggles, as they are currently on a five-game losing streak and have a 0-3 record since the roster overhaul at the trade deadline. The team currently sits in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with a 24-30 record, in a season where they appear headed toward rebuilding.
For Sexton, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, this emotional outburst could tarnish his image as he seeks to establish himself with his new team. The 27-year-old player, 8th pick in the 2018 draft, is going through an adjustment period after leaving Charlotte where he played primarily off the bench, averaging 14.4 points this season.
