Kevin Durant made NBA history Tuesday night at the Toyota Center in Houston. In the Houston Rockets‘ 102-95 victory over the LA Clippers, the 35-year-old superstar reached the 20-point threshold for the 1000th time in his career, joining LeBron James, Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only players in history to accomplish this feat.

Durant finished the game with 26 points on 8/22 shooting, including 3/7 from three-point range, along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Despite his 5 turnovers, the former MVP delivered in crucial moments, particularly by making the game’s final two free throws to seal the Texas victory.

Rockets take control in the fourth quarter

The first half was particularly competitive, with neither team able to build a significant lead. The Clippers led by just one point at halftime (52-51), but the Rockets raised their level after the break.

Houston took a six-point lead entering the final quarter before going on a 7-0 run to extend their advantage to 85-72. Reed Sheppard drove home the advantage with a difficult three-pointer against Brook Lopez, allowing the Rockets to lead 92-77 with approximately 6 and a half minutes remaining. Clippers coach Tyronn Lue then emptied his bench, giving Isaiah Jackson, acquired in the Ivica Zubac trade, the opportunity to play his first minutes in his new colors.

Alperen Sengun was the perfect complement to Durant with 22 points on 9/14 shooting, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Amen Thompson added 16 points in his return after missing the game against Oklahoma City due to illness, while Jabari Smith Jr. recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

For the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard led the offense with 24 points and 8 rebounds, but shot only 28% from three-point range (2/7). John Collins was the only other Los Angeles player to reach double figures with 17 points. Bennedict Mathurin, in his first game since arriving from Indiana, contributed 9 points and 7 rebounds in 26 minutes.
