At the Paris La Défense Arena packed with over 17,000 fans, AS Monaco played a major matchup against Nanterre, second in the standings. A historic event… but without Mike James (6’1″, 35 years old).
The all-time leading scorer in EuroLeague history does not appear on the roster, just under 48 hours after a series of messages posted on his social media, in which he expressed his frustration with the club’s situation.
Present in Paris… but absent on the court
The absence is all the more puzzling since Mike James did make the trip. According to La Chaîne L’Équipe consultant Stephen Brun, the American participated in the morning shootaround, without really getting involved. He even arrived on the bench during the first half.
Officially, no specific communication has been made about the reasons for his absence. Sporting? Medical? Internal decision? The situation remains unclear.
An already depleted roster
The decision not to register him arrives at a tricky moment for Vassilis Spanoulis. Monaco head coach was already operating without his two bigs, Kevarrius Hayes and Yoan Makoundou, both sidelined through injury.
With fewer than 12 fully available players, losing his primary offensive option only sharpens the concern. Beyond the tactical adjustments, it inevitably raises questions about the group’s rhythm — and about where Monaco stands mentally heading into a critical stretch.
A tense atmosphere around the club
In recent weeks, Mike James has seemed particularly impacted by AS Monaco’s financial uncertainty. Reports of strike threats inside the locker room and tensions tied to delayed salaries have cast a shadow over the group.
Within that backdrop, his repeated late-night outings — and especially his absence for a symbolic event like the Paris La Défense Arena game — are difficult to view in isolation from the broader climate around the club.
The larger question now is whether this non-registration amounts to a one-off disciplinary moment or hints at something more structural inside the Roca Team, just as the season moves into its most decisive stretch.

As if the broader context weren’t enough, a courtside incident underscored the tension in the building. During the game, a heated exchange broke out near the Monaco bench, prompting security to step in and separate Mike James from a spectator.
The moment was brief, but it felt telling — another layer added to an already loaded evening. Between his absence from the roster, a late arrival to the bench and visible friction on the sidelines, the mood around the Roca Team remains unmistakably strained.
In a stretch where every gesture and decision is magnified, AS Monaco is trying to push forward in an environment that feels anything but calm — a difficult backdrop for a team with high-level ambitions.
