Theo Maledon (1.93m, 23 years old) had expressed his ambition to play for a top EuroLeague team. After a high-level season at ASVEL, the former NBA point guard will take a step up by joining one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs: Real Madrid. His signing, anticipated for several months, was confirmed this Thursday, May 22nd by BasketNews.
In 2024-2025, Theo Maledon has dazzled the European scene with his talent. Wearing ASVEL’s jersey, the Norman was one of the most impactful players of the season, earning a spot in the All-EuroLeague Second Team. Averaging 17 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1 steal in 33 games, he established himself as the offensive leader of the Villeurbanne team.
His influence wasn’t limited to statistics: in leading ASVEL to 13 victories (up from 9 the previous season), he particularly shone against the competition’s powerhouses, notably defeating Olympiacos, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Anadolu Efes twice.
While Fenerbahce was mentioned among the contenders, discussions were most advanced with Real Madrid. According to BasketNews, a two-year agreement had been reached between both parties several months ago.
Maledon himself had hinted at his desire to join such a club: « I think that with a successful season like mine, the next step in EuroLeague would be to have a similar impact in a team that competes at the top and has big ambitions », he had stated earlier this season.
Returning from a mixed NBA experience, Maledon has fully revitalized his career in France. His ability to create plays, score efficiently (52.5% on 2-pointers, 34.4% on 3-pointers, 90.4% on free throws) and handle pressure in big games has reminded NBA scouts of his potential. His season was brilliant enough to consider a return overseas in the medium term, but the former Pole France player has chosen to commit to an ambitious EuroLeague project.
