Cholet Basket perfectly started their 2025-2026 season by dominating SIG Strasbourg (92-74) in a well-controlled game. While the collective victory is noteworthy, the individual performance of Nathan De Sousa (6’2″, 22 years old) also caught attention. The French point guard shattered his Betclic ELITE scoring record with 18 points, confirming his steady progression by surpassing his previous record of 13 points, achieved twice against Nancy and Blois in 2024.

A hot start validating his promotion

Against an overwhelmed Strasbourg team, the 22-year-old point guard showed great offensive efficiency and wasn’t shy about shooting. In just 19 minutes of play, the 2023 U20 European champion finished as his team’s top scorer with 18 points (5/8 from 2-point range, 2/2 from 3-point range, and 2/4 from the free-throw line), for a 16 efficiency rating.

Steady progression since his return to Cholet

After spending the 2022-2023 season on loan in Pro B with Alliance Sport Alsace, Nathan De Sousa returned to Cholet Basket in 2023-2024. Since then, he’s gained more responsibilities, and his new record shows he’s ready to reach another level, becoming a real offensive option for the Mauges team. Previously known primarily as a fierce competitor, intense defender, and good passer, the Picardy native averaged 5.6 points in nearly 19 minutes per game last season. With this offensive benchmark performance, he’s set the tone for this new season and affirmed his role as a key player within the Cholet roster, which includes two other point guards, T.J. Campbell and Aaron Towo-Nansi.

A complete contribution despite limited playing time

Beyond his scoring, Nathan De Sousa’s performance was well-rounded. Adding 2 rebounds and 3 assists (with only 2 turnovers), he showed he can impact the game in multiple ways. Not always consistent from outside, he showed improvement in his 3-point shooting with a perfect 2/2 from behind the arc. This progress is particularly encouraging because, if sustained, it could open up new opportunities against opposing defenses. If he maintains this level, Nathan De Sousa will undoubtedly be a player to watch closely this season in Betclic ELITE.
