When Lamar Stevens hit the game-winning basket for Cleveland against the Atlanta Hawks in February 2021, few could have imagined the winding journey that had brought him to that decisive NBA moment. The Philadelphia forward built his career on perseverance, turning every obstacle into a stepping stone.
After leading Roman Catholic High School to a state title with 20 points in the championship game, Stevens joined Penn State where he made history. Over four seasons, he never missed a start, establishing what was at the time the longest consecutive starts streak in the country. That remarkable consistency propelled him to the top of the university's all-time scoring list with 2,207 points, just seven short of the all-time record.
His collegiate peak came at the 2018 NIT, where he guided the Nittany Lions to the title and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Two years later, he posted a career-high 33 points against Minnesota, cementing his status as an offensive leader.
Undrafted in 2020, Stevens refused to give up. Cleveland gave him his shot, with Boston and Memphis following. Between NBA stints, he excelled in the G League with the Motor City Cruise, averaging 17.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game this season.
Beyond the hardwood, Stevens revealed another side of his personality by publishing "Lamar's Climb -- A Journey to Happy Valley", a children's book supporting special education.
