Player Profile
When Cameron Payne arrived at Murray State in 2013, few observers imagined that this unassuming point guard would one day reach the NBA Finals. Yet this remarkable transformation — from 5'5" as a high school freshman to a 6'2" professional player — already hinted at a career defined by reinvention.
At Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Payne led his team to a state title in 2013, yet remained a three-star prospect overlooked by major universities. Murray State gave him his shot, and the Bartlett native seized the opportunity with both hands. In just two seasons, he set program records and became the second-fastest player in Murray State history to reach 1,000 career points, earning the admiration of NBA scouts.
Selected 14th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft by Oklahoma City, Payne embarked on a rollercoaster professional journey. Stints with the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, a spell in China with the Shanxi Loongs, and multiple ten-day contracts saw the point guard accumulate experiences without ever finding a permanent home.
It was in Phoenix that Payne rediscovered his purpose. Becoming a reliable sixth man, he brought his playmaking vision and composure in clutch moments, contributing to the Suns' remarkable run to the 2021 NBA Finals. This resurrection perfectly illustrates his adaptability and professionalism — qualities that now allow him to move between Milwaukee, Philadelphia, and New York with the calm assurance of a seasoned veteran.
