Nikola Topić finally stepped onto the NBA court. The young Serbian guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder made his professional debut Thursday night in a 110-93 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, four months after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

A well-deserved ovation after an obstacle-filled journey

Topić’s entry into the game at 1:55 remaining in the first quarter triggered a standing ovation at the Paycom Center. The 6’7″ player, selected 12th overall in the 2024 NBA draft, scored his first professional points on a mid-range shot near the free-throw line early in the second quarter.

In 12 minutes of play, Topić compiled 2 points on 1-of-3 shooting, 1 rebound, and 1 assist. Modest statistics that belie the magnitude of the journey the 20-year-old Serbian traveled to reach this historic moment.

A gradual return via the G League

Topić’s path to the NBA has been particularly difficult. After missing his entire rookie season due to a partial ACL tear suffered before the draft, he had played in Summer League and preseason before his cancer diagnosis in October.

Following surgery and chemotherapy treatment, Topić gradually regained form. Assigned to the OKC Blue last Sunday, he played two G League games, averaging 14.5 points and 5.5 assists.

The opportunity arose with the absences of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Ajay Mitchell, all injured. For the Thunder, leaders of the Western Conference with a 42-14 record, this evening will be remembered for the courage and determination of their young Serbian prospect.
