The separation between Ja Morant and the Memphis Grizzlies appears inevitable after a tumultuous season marked by tensions, injuries, and organizational upheaval. According to ESPN reports, Morant has internally indicated he won’t play for Memphis anymore, confirming a rupture that has been building for months.

The most striking development is the dramatic decline in Morant’s trade value across the NBA. NBA executives now estimate that a potential return for the former All-Star would be comparable to what Atlanta received for Trae Young – CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, without any draft picks. This represents a stunning fall for a player who averaged 27.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists when he won Most Improved Player at age 22.

Sacramento Kings Show Interest Despite Market Concerns

Among the teams monitoring the situation, the Sacramento Kings have emerged as a credible candidate. The franchise had previously discussed a potential deal with Memphis before the trade deadline without reaching an agreement, but sources suggest Sacramento could revisit negotiations this summer, particularly if they fail to find their point guard in the draft.

« There’s certainly going to be hesitation, but there’s going to be several desperate teams, » a Western Conference director of pro personnel told ESPN regarding Morant’s current market value.

The Grizzlies have been aggressively seeking trade partners for Morant while dealing with his calf injury, but general manager Zach Kleiman’s efforts haven’t materialized into concrete offers. « This is about organizational direction now, » Kleiman told Memphis media after the trade deadline. « This is not about Ja in particular. »

Memphis has already committed to their rebuild, trading two-time All-Star Jaren Jackson Jr. to Utah for three future first-round picks and previously sending Desmond Bane to Orlando. These moves dismantled what was once considered among the league’s most promising young cores.

The relationship between Morant and head coach Tuomas Iisalo has deteriorated significantly, culminating in a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team following a locker room confrontation after a Halloween loss to the Lakers. Sources indicate Morant remains frustrated with the organization’s decision to support Iisalo and feels alienated by teammates who were instructed to give him space during his suspension.

Several league executives believe teams might attempt to acquire Morant at a reduced cost, hoping to revitalize his career in a new environment. However, one thing seems certain: Memphis can no longer expect to receive a major return for their former franchise cornerstone.
