The Memphis Grizzlies made a decision Tuesday night regarding Ja Morant‘s future this season. The All-Star point guard will not play again in 2025-2026 due to a persistent left elbow injury that has kept him off the court for over two months.
Plasma injection recommended to optimize healing
Morant has been suffering from a sprained ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his left elbow since January 21, during a 124-122 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Despite his rehabilitation, the player continues to experience pain and imaging tests from March 5 revealed « incomplete healing » of the injury.
Following a recent consultation, it was recommended that Morant receive a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection to optimize ligament healing. This procedure will definitively prevent him from returning this season, but the Grizzlies expect him to be fully recovered for the start of the 2026-2027 campaign.

A truncated season at only 20 games
This new injury concludes a particularly difficult 2025-2026 season for the former Murray State player, who only appeared in 20 games. His statistics of 19.5 points per game (his lowest total since his second season), 8.1 assists and only 41% shooting (23.5% from 3-point range) reflect his struggles.
Morant had already missed more than a month at the start of the season due to a right calf injury. This new absence extends a rough stretch for the 26-year-old player, who has only played 79 games over the past three seasons, between multiple injuries and suspensions.
The Grizzlies had explored the trade market before the February deadline, but Morant « didn’t really have a market » according to reports. He still has two seasons and $87 million remaining on his current contract, and the hope remains to see him return to his spectacular level from the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons, when Memphis was among the best teams in the Western Conference.
