The Timberwolves overcame a double-digit first-half deficit to secure their seventh victory in eight games, moving them firmly into fourth place in the competitive Western Conference standings. Edwards, fresh off being named Western Conference Player of the Week, recorded his ninth 40-point game of the season while fans serenaded him with « MVP! » chants in the final minute.
Minnesota trailed by 11 points in the first half and managed just 3 of 16 attempts from beyond the arc before halftime, with Edwards accounting for all three successful 3-points. The Wolves shot a dismal 18 percent from deep in the opening half, reflecting their overall lackadaisical effort level.
Edwards Takes Over in Crucial Fourth Quarter
The game’s turning point came in the third quarter when Minnesota finally drew even at 72-all before Edwards converted a layup to put the Wolves ahead 74-72. From that moment, Minnesota never trailed again, thanks largely to their improved defensive intensity and ball containment.
Edwards saved his best for last, erupting for 13 fourth-quarter points including three crucial 3-points as the Wolves pulled away from Memphis. « We played like ass today, » a serious Edwards said standing next to his locker after the game. « But we can’t complain about wins. »
Julius Randle provided excellent support with 23 points and 11 rebounds, overcoming a shaky start that saw him score just 6 points on 2-6 shooting in the first half with a team-low minus-9 rating. The veteran forward responded with 17 second-half points to finish with a plus-10 impact.
« Another really good all-around game…he did an outstanding job playing with force, » Head Coach Chris Finch said of Randle. « He was really instrumental in that third quarter for us in finding a rhythm. »
Grizzlies Fight Hard Despite Talent Disadvantage
Memphis, playing the second game of a back-to-back, saw their two-game winning streak end despite a valiant effort. Jaylen Wells led the Grizzlies with 19 points, including 15 crucial first-half points that helped Memphis take a 62-57 halftime lead. Cedric Coward contributed 15 points in the losing effort.
The Grizzlies mounted a late rally, going on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to four points in the final minute, but couldn’t complete the comeback against a Timberwolves team that dominated the boards 51-33.
Ayo Dosunmu provided valuable bench scoring with 14 points for Minnesota, while Kyle Anderson made his return to the Wolves lineup, contributing 2 points in 13 minutes just one day after being re-signed following his release by Memphis.
« We were better on the ball [in the second half], » Finch explained. « We were tighter on switches…first half we were pretty loose. »
The Timberwolves continue their homestand Thursday night against the Toronto Raptors, while Memphis hosts Portland on Wednesday.
