The Milwaukee Bucks have joined the race for Ja Morant. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Wisconsin franchise maintains interest in the Memphis Grizzlies point guard, as the team is « listening to offers » for their 26-year-old star before the February 5th deadline.
A Risky but Enticing Bet for Milwaukee
The Bucks’ interest follows clear logic: adding a true outside creator to relieve Giannis Antetokounmpo and revitalize a struggling team (17-21). A Morant–Giannis tandem would put « rare pressure on the opposing rim » with constant pick-and-rolls and a permanent penetration threat.
However, this case represents a « blockbuster gamble » for Milwaukee. Morant has only played 18 games this season, averaging 19.0 points and 7.6 assists, but with declining percentages (40.1% from the field, 20.8% from three-point range). His injury history and off-court turbulence, including a one-game suspension in November for « conduct detrimental to the team, » complicate his market value.
Fierce Competition Despite Questions
Despite these concerns, several franchises are monitoring the situation. Yahoo Sports cites Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Sacramento Kings as « teams to watch, » while The Athletic mentions Brooklyn as an « outsider. »
For Memphis, which wants young players and draft picks, the recent Trae Young trade (sent to Washington for Corey Kispert and CJ McCollum) illustrates the difficulty of valuing a struggling All-Star point guard. The Grizzlies (16-21) are considering a rebuild around Jaren Jackson Jr. while remaining « open » to keeping Morant.
The financial structure represents a major challenge for Milwaukee. With a salary of $39.4 million this season and $87.1 million guaranteed over the next two years, Morant would require aggregating multiple contracts, risking weakening an already limited roster. For now, the Bucks are only at the « interest stage » according to local press.
