In a frenzied Target Center, the Minnesota Timberwolves secured a spectacular hard-fought victory against the San Antonio Spurs (104-103), coming back from a 19-point deficit. Anthony Edwards, who scored 23 points and three assists, sealed this comeback with a clutch floater in the final seconds. Victor Wembanyama, the game’s leading scorer with 29 points and 7 rebounds, could not prevent his team’s defeat despite his return to the starting lineup.
After the game, Edwards, true to his usual candor, revealed his doubts facing the French center during the decisive possession. « I was lost. Did you see me? I was like: Damn, do I take the shot, do I drive? I was lost », confided the Wolves guard in the locker room.
« I didn’t know what to do at that moment. He’s so tall, man. He can block everything. He can block layups, jump shots, he’s got good footwork, he’s mobile. He’s truly a one-of-a-kind player », said Edwards, acknowledging Wembanyama‘s deterrent impact.
With 27 seconds left, while San Antonio led by one point, Edwards found himself facing Wembanyama after a screen. « I feel like he thought I was going to take the mid-range shot, for sure. He probably would have blocked it, so I had to drive », explained the 24-year-old star, who ultimately opted for a drive to the right and a floater off the backboard.
This sequence perfectly illustrates Edwards‘ progress in crucial moments. « He values the ball more. He understands that every possession is really important », emphasized his teammate Rudy Gobert. « A few years ago, he probably would have tried a step-back 3-pointer backing away from Wemby. Tonight, he showed patience and composure. »
Edwards is now establishing himself as a true killer in the clutch, averaging 5.4 points in decisive moments this season with 71% shooting. Minnesota has a record of nine wins in fourteen close games, making Edwards a credible candidate for Clutch Player of the Year. This victory strengthens the Wolves‘ momentum in a still fiercely competitive Western Conference.
