Ime Udoka extends with Rockets after Knicks rumors

The Houston Rockets have officially announced a multi-year contract extension for Ime Udoka, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in the league according to ESPN. This extension comes just days after the New York Knicks expressed interest in the 47-year-old coach.
The Texas franchise had rejected New York’s interview request, preferring to secure their coach for the long term. A logical decision given the excellent results achieved since his arrival in April 2023.
Proven results justify this extension
Ime Udoka has transformed the Rockets in just two seasons. After a promising first year with a balanced record of 41 wins and 41 losses and 11th place in the West, he took another step forward in the 2024-25 season.
Houston finished with 52 wins and 30 losses, securing 2nd place in the Western Conference and returning to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. It was their best record since the 2018-19 season (53-29). Despite a first-round elimination against the Golden State Warriors in seven games, the progress is undeniable.
Under Udoka’s leadership, the Rockets have an overall record of 93 wins and 71 losses, while the franchise had only won 59 games in the previous three seasons. The defensive improvement is particularly noteworthy: Houston finished 5th in defensive efficiency this season, after ranking near the bottom in 2022-23.
The coach can rely on a young and promising core with Jalen Green, Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson, all 22 years old. This extension is part of a continuity and sustainable development strategy implemented by owners Tilman and Patrick Fertitta, along with general manager Rafael Stone.
The future looks bright for the Rockets, especially as Kevin Durant’s name has been persistently circulating in trade rumors to strengthen the Texas roster.
