Derrick Rose’s number 1 will join the retired jerseys of the greatest figures in Bulls history: Michael Jordan’s 23, Scottie Pippen’s 33, Jerry Sloan’s 4, and Bob Love’s 10. This recognition demonstrates the extraordinary impact the Chicago native had on his hometown franchise.
Drafted first overall in 2008, Rose revolutionized the Bulls’ game for seven seasons. Named Rookie of the Year in 2009, he won the MVP title in 2011 at just 22 years, 6 months, and 30 days, becoming the youngest recipient in NBA history. That same year, he led Chicago to the Eastern Conference Finals with a 62-win regular season record.
Moved by this announcement, Rose reacted on social media: « The game has given me more than I could have ever imagined. From Englewood to the rafters, my story has always been about making the city proud. This isn’t for me, it’s for Chicago. »
A career marked by excellence despite injuries
In seven seasons wearing the Bulls’ red jersey, Derrick Rose averaged 19.7 points and 6.2 assists per game. A three-time All-Star (2010-2012), he led Chicago to the playoffs six times. His career was unfortunately marred by numerous injuries, notably the ACL tear in 2012 that sidelined him for the entire 2012-2013 season.
The Bulls also announced they will celebrate Rose throughout the season with collector figurines distributed during four games, commemorating his most memorable moments. The January 24 ceremony is already shaping up to be one of the season’s most anticipated events, with ticket prices reaching record levels according to TickPick.
After stints with New York, Cleveland, Minnesota, Detroit, and Memphis, Rose retired in September 2024. His legacy in Chicago remains intact, that of a hometown kid who restored hope to a franchise searching for identity after the Jordan era.
