The love story between Damian Lillard and Portland enters a new chapter. After being cut by the Milwaukee Bucks in early July, the nine-time All-Star point guard chose to return to Oregon, where it all began in 2012. A return to his roots that demonstrates the deep connection between the player and his first NBA franchise.

The three-year, $42 million contract includes a player option for the 2027-2028 season and notably a no-trade clause. This makes Lillard the second active player in the league to have this privilege, alongside LeBron James. An additional guarantee for the 35-year-old veteran who wants to control his future.

A return motivated by personal and family reasons

Lillard’s decision is primarily explained by personal considerations. Currently in rehabilitation after his Achilles tendon rupture on April 27 during the playoffs against the Indiana Pacers, the point guard will be able to recover near his family and children who remained in Portland. The 2025-2026 season will be entirely dedicated to his recovery.

Financially, this new contract adds to the money still owed to him by the Bucks. In 2025-2026, Lillard will earn $70 million in total, and $141 million over the next two years. The Bucks, for their part, will save approximately $11.7 million through this compensation.

For Portland, this return represents much more than just a marketing move. Lillard remains a living legend of the franchise, holding the records for points (19,376) and 3-pointers (2,387) in team history. But his experience will also be valuable in mentoring young talents like Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe, Donovan Clingan, and rookie Yang Hansen.

This signing also marks a turning point in the Blazers’ rebuild. With Jrue Holiday recently acquired and now Lillard back, Portland seems to want to accelerate its return to the playoffs. An audacious bet that relies on the experience and leadership of its veterans to guide the new generation toward success.
