Cleveland extends one of its key executives through 2029-2030

The Cleveland Cavaliers continue to trust their leadership. The organization officially announced Monday the contract extension of Koby Altman, president of basketball operations, through the 2029-2030 season, according to ESPN. This extension demonstrates owner Dan Gilbert’s satisfaction with the franchise’s upward trajectory.

A reward after a historic season
This extension comes after an exceptional season where the Cavaliers secured first place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 64 wins and 18 losses. Despite a disappointing elimination in the second round of playoffs against the Indiana Pacers in five games, injuries to key players like Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Darius Garland and De’Andre Hunter largely explained this premature exit.
Altman, 42, joined the Cavaliers organization in 2012 and gradually climbed the ranks. Named assistant general manager during the 2016-2017 season, he was promoted to general manager in 2017 before ascending to his current position as president of basketball operations in 2022.
The architect of the Cavaliers’ revival
Altman orchestrated Cleveland’s renaissance. He supervised the drafting of Darius Garland in 2019 and Evan Mobley in 2021, while making the major acquisition of Donovan Mitchell in 2022 via trade. These moves have enabled the Cavaliers to post the third-best NBA record over the past three seasons.
During the offseason, Altman continued strengthening the roster by trading for Lonzo Ball from the Chicago Bulls, re-signing Sam Merrill and bringing back veteran Larry Nance Jr.. The hiring of coach Kenny Atkinson, named Coach of the Year, also illustrates the quality of his work.
This extension, the third for Altman and his staff including general manager Mike Gansey and assistant general manager Brandon Weems, reflects owner Dan Gilbert’s patience and long-term vision. With 64 wins this season, the Cavaliers posted the second-best record in their history and are now establishing themselves as a serious NBA title contender.
