FC Barcelona wasted no time. This Saturday, the Catalans wrapped up their semifinal against Tenerife in three games, winning on the floor of Santiago Martín 76-85. After two victories at the Palau Blaugrana, Xavi Pascual and his men secured the series on the road, in a hostile atmosphere and against a Tinerfeño side that had eliminated Real Madrid in the previous round.

Punter and Clyburn, Barça’s Offensive Leaders

The game was tight for three quarters. Tenerife, backed by their home crowd, even built a 13-point lead in the second quarter, with Doornekamp hitting 3 three-pointers and Yebo very active in the paint. At halftime, the hosts led 42-34, and Barça needed to respond.

The response came right out of the locker room. Despite Kevin Punter being benched with three fouls, Will Clyburn and Laprovittola took over. A 0-9 run in two minutes was enough to erase the deficit (42-43). The third quarter ended 58-56 in favor of the visitors, leaving everything open.

It was in the closing minutes that Punter made the difference. Back on the court, the American guard hit two three-pointers and a two-point basket to push the score to 60-69 and crush the home team’s hopes. Tenerife tried to fight back through Yebo and Jaime Fernández (68-72), but Clyburn ended the suspense with an unstoppable three-pointer at 76-83, with a minute and a half remaining.

Tenerife Bows Out After a Historic Run, Huertas Heading to Retirement?

Will Clyburn finishes as Barça‘s top scorer with 19 points, ahead of Kevin Punter (17 points) and Laprovittola (13 points). On the Tinerfeño side, Yebo (16 points) and Marcelinho Huertas (17 points) – in what may have been the last game of a legendary career – gave everything, but it wasn’t enough against Barcelona’s bench depth.

Tenerife exits the competition with their heads held high. The Canary Islands side had a historic quarterfinal run by eliminating Real Madrid, the regular season leaders. This semifinal loss does nothing to diminish a remarkable campaign.

Barça now awaits their opponent in the final. Valencia Basket and Joventut face off in the other semifinal, with the Valencians one win away from qualifying. In addition to the Liga Endesa title, the Blaugrana also secured a spot in the next Supercopa this Saturday night at Santiago Martín.
