The Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey faces reckless driving charges after being stopped by police for driving 101 mph (163 km/h) in a 55 mph (88 km/h) zone on May 1st in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.

According to an affidavit obtained by the Lafayette Journal & Courier, the incident occurred on State Road 25 in West Point, Indiana, at 7:03 PM. An Indiana State Police officer driving southbound observed Edey’s vehicle, a Kia Sorento, traveling northbound at excessive speed. The officer then turned around to catch up with the player and stop him.

A promising rookie season despite injuries

During his arrest, Edey explained to law enforcement that he was attempting to pass another vehicle, justifying his excessive speed. He was released at the scene after the intervention. A preliminary hearing for this misdemeanor charge is scheduled for Monday, June 23rd at the Tippecanoe County courthouse.

This incident comes as the 23-year-old completes a remarkable rookie season. Selected 9th overall in the 2024 NBA draft, Edey led rookie statistics with 58% field goal percentage and 8.3 rebounds per game. The former Purdue NCAA player recorded 12 double-doubles during the season, a record for a Memphis rookie since Marc Gasol in 2008-09. He also ranked 4th in blocks and 2nd in overall plus-minus with +164. These performances earned him a spot on the All-Rookie team.

However, his progress may be hampered by injuries. According to ESPN, Edey will likely miss the start of the 2025-26 season after re-injuring his left ankle during an offseason workout. This injury required surgery to restabilize the ankle, the same one he had previously injured in November, causing him to miss 12 games during his rookie season.
