The Chicago Bulls ended a seven-game losing streak with a dominant win over the Washington Wizards, 129-98. The victory came in the team’s first game since the firing of the franchise’s two top basketball operations executives.
Rob Dillingham was the standout performer, setting a new career high with 26 points. The Bulls took control early, building a 38-18 lead after the first quarter against a Washington team looking to maximize its chances of landing a high draft pick. Guerschon Yabusele contributed to the Bulls’ show of force with 9 points and 6 rebounds in under 27 minutes.
Total domination over the NBA’s worst team
Chicago kept pressing, extending the lead to 66-37 at halftime and 100-63 after three quarters. The Wizards, currently the worst team in the NBA, showed a glaring lack of defensive effort throughout the game.
Patrick Williams added 20 points, his season high, while Tre Jones chipped in with 20 points and 9 assists. This collective performance sets the Bulls up nicely ahead of their next matchup against Washington, scheduled for Thursday night.
For the Wizards, Bilal Coulibaly scored 19 points in a losing effort. Washington fielded two two-way contract players, Juju Reese and Leaky Black, along with veteran Anthony Gill. Reese stood out with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Sharife Cooper also scored 17 points.
A turbulent backdrop for Chicago
This win comes amid a crisis for the Bulls, who held a 23-22 record on January 24 but have since collapsed, losing 27 of their last 34 games. Monday’s firing of executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley marks a turning point for the franchise.
On Tuesday, CEO Michael Reinsdorf expressed his desire to bring back head coach Billy Donovan next season. The Bulls made the playoffs only once in six seasons under Karnisovas and Eversley. The Wizards, meanwhile, have lost seven straight games and 23 of their last 24, cementing their status as a team in full rebuild mode.
