The Golden State Warriors are preparing to finish the pre-All-Star period without Stephen Curry, a situation that is already disrupting their short-term plans. The Bay Area team has lost three of its last four games since Curry’s knee injury, and coach Steve Kerr acknowledged there’s a « good chance » the two-time MVP won’t return before the break.
An extended absence that complicates the playoff race
« I think he’s uncertain, » Kerr said, via NBC Sports Bay Area, before the Warriors’ 105-99 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday. « Obviously, he won’t play tonight. I’d say he’s uncertain for the next game, but we’ll see. There’s a good chance he won’t play until after the break. We’re taking things day by day. »
The Warriors still have to host the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday and the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday before the All-Star break. The timing of Curry’s absence complicates things for a team still fighting for position in a very tight Western Conference. Golden State is currently four wins away from the top 6 and only three wins ahead of 10th place.
Curry is suffering from patellofemoral pain syndrome, commonly called « runner’s knee » – an overuse condition different from the knee tendinitis he had managed earlier last season. After the Warriors’ 101-97 win in Phoenix on Thursday, Curry told Anthony Slater of ESPN that his recovery was progressing positively.
A cautious approach to preserve the future
« It’s different from last year, but it’s something that will heal, » Curry told Slater. However, Curry acknowledged the delicate balance required. « If I come back too early, it could flare up, » he said. « It’s something we still need to monitor and manage. »
The injury worsened midway through the third quarter during the 131-124 loss to the Detroit Pistons last week. Curry grimaced after driving to the basket, favored his right leg and left shortly after. Kerr’s comments suggest the Warriors are decidedly erring on the side of caution – a notable shift as Curry approaches his 38th birthday next month.
Steph Curry hasn’t been ruled out of the next two games, but Kerr also indicated that Warriors could hold Curry out to the All-Star break to let him get his knee right. Called him doubtful for Monday. https://t.co/1c7YWsY7X1

« It’s a matter of learning as we go what works in terms of rehabilitation, » Curry explained. « Because it’s still painful. We need to try to get rid of all the inflammation and pain. » With playoff positioning still at stake, Golden State appears ready to absorb immediate losses to ensure their cornerstone returns at full strength for the stretch run.
