Shai Gilgeous-Alexander came close to disaster Sunday night, but ultimately succeeded in extending his record streak of consecutive games with at least 20 points. In Oklahoma City‘s 116-103 victory over Minnesota, the Canadian guard reached 20 points in the final minutes to extend his streak to 128 games, further surpassing Wilt Chamberlain’s former record of 126.
Suspense maintained until the final minutes
The evening had started poorly for Gilgeous-Alexander, who had scored only 4 points in the first half with a terrible 2 for 10 shooting. With only 10 points entering the fourth quarter, his historic streak seemed in jeopardy.
The decisive moment came with 1 minute 46 seconds remaining, when he had only 17 points. Closely guarded by Anthony Edwards, Gilgeous-Alexander hit a contested jump shot while drawing the foul. With the crowd standing and chanting « M-V-P! », he converted the free throw to reach his 20 points and maintain his streak.
« He finished the game with 20 points and 10 assists, once again confirming his status as a serious candidate for the MVP title », one can note from this clutch performance characteristic of the 27-year-old player.

An eighth consecutive victory for the Thunder
This individual performance is part of an exceptional collective dynamic for Oklahoma City, which secured its eighth straight victory to improve its record to 53 wins and 15 losses, the best in the NBA.
Chet Holmgren contributed with 21 points and 9 rebounds, while Isaiah Joe added 20 points. On the Timberwolves side, Julius Randle led the offense with 32 points, supported by Anthony Edwards‘ 19 points.
The Thunder dominated statistically by forcing 22 turnovers against only 7 committed, and attempting 101 shots compared to 77 for Minnesota. This streak by Gilgeous-Alexander, who is averaging 31.8 points this season with 55.4% shooting, will continue to be scrutinized Tuesday during the road trip to Orlando.
