Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wrote a new page in NBA history Monday night. The Oklahoma City Thunder guard tied Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary record by scoring at least 20 points for the 126th consecutive time, during the 129-126 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

The reigning MVP reached this symbolic milestone with a 3-pointer late in the third quarter, bringing his total to 22 points. A performance that placed him alongside one of the league’s greatest legends, Wilt Chamberlain, who established this record between 1961 and 1963 with the Philadelphia and San Francisco Warriors.

A Champion’s Finish to Seal the Victory

Beyond the historic record, Gilgeous-Alexander delivered an offensive masterclass with 35 points, 15 assists and 9 rebounds. But it was his game-winning basket that will be remembered. After Nikola Jokic tied the game with a 3-pointer followed by a Jamal Murray free throw for a rare four-point play, the Canadian guard answered the call.

With only 2.7 seconds on the clock, Gilgeous-Alexander took responsibility. He eliminated Spencer Jones on the wing before draining a step-back 3-pointer to give the Thunder the victory. « Extraordinary confidence – he doesn’t change his mindset regardless of the situation, » commented coach Mark Daigneault after the game.

This performance gives the Thunder a record of 51 wins and 15 losses, the best in the NBA, despite missing three starters (Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein). Gilgeous-Alexander will have the opportunity to definitively break Chamberlain’s record next Thursday against the Boston Celtics at Paycom Center.

The last time the Hamilton native failed to score at least 20 points was on October 30, 2024 against the San Antonio Spurs (18 points). Since then, the 6’6″ guard has maintained phenomenal consistency with an average of 31.6 points per game this season, positioning himself as the favorite for a second consecutive MVP title.
