The Memphis Grizzlies made a strong move at the start of free agency by securing Santi Aldama‘s future. The 6’11 » Spanish forward signed a three-year extension worth $52.5 million, averaging $17.5 million per season according to ESPN. This extension follows the massive deal given to Jaren Jackson Jr ($240 million over five years), confirming Memphis‘s intention to maintain its core despite recent changes.

An investment justified by consistent progress
At 24, Aldama earns the first big contract of his career after a remarkable 2024-2025 season. Selected 30th in the 2021 draft, the Spaniard has climbed the ranks to become one of the team’s most reliable bench scorers.
His statistics speak for themselves: 12.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in 25.5 minutes. Shooting 48.3% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range (two makes per game), he provides the offensive versatility sought by the coaching staff.
This extension takes on special significance following the departure of Desmond Bane, traded to the Orlando Magic. Memphis is counting on Aldama to partially compensate for the loss of their former shooter’s outside scoring, especially since Luke Kennard also left for Atlanta.
Memphis builds its future around Morant and Jackson Jr
With this extension, the Grizzlies shape their roster for the coming seasons. The duo of Ja Morant – Jaren Jackson Jr now forms the backbone of the project, surrounded by complementary pieces like Brandon Clarke, Jaylen Wells, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and rookie Zach Edey.
The Tennessee organization clearly shows its ambitions despite a coaching change and some notable departures. By securing Aldama at the market opening, Memphis sends a strong signal about its desire to remain competitive in an increasingly tough Western Conference.
This aggressive strategy at the start of free agency demonstrates that the Grizzlies aren’t abandoning their long-term project and intend to return to the playoffs after an underwhelming 2024-2025 season.
