Player Profile
Nicknamed "The Trolley Problem", Santiago Aldama embodies an unconventional journey where unexpected choices have shaped a promising career. Son of Santiago Aldama, a Spanish Olympian in 1992, and nephew of professional player Santi Toledo, the young big man from the Canary Islands seemed destined for the biggest European clubs.
Yet, despite interest from FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Gran Canaria, Aldama chose the local Canterbury Basketball Academy before surprising everyone by heading to the United States to join Loyola Maryland. This bold decision, driven by family ties and academic interest, marked the beginning of a remarkable rise.
After knee surgery that delayed his NCAA debut, the Spaniard truly exploded onto the American hardwood. His exceptional performances peaked with a 22-rebound game, tying the Patriot League record. These impressive statistics earned him multiple Rookie of the Week honors and caught the attention of NBA scouts.
Selected 30th overall by Utah and then traded to Memphis in 2021, Aldama has progressively established himself with the Grizzlies. His averages of 12.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists over 65 games reflect his growing versatility.
His international trajectory confirms his potential: MVP of the U18 European Championship in 2019, he guided Spain to the 2024 Olympic Games by earning MVP honors at the qualifying tournament. The first player in Loyola Maryland history to reach the Olympics, Aldama continues to write a unique story, proving that unconventional paths sometimes lead to the greatest heights.
