Real Madrid parts ways with Chus Mateo, Sergio Scariolo expected to return

EuroLeague - After a 2025 season without a Final Four appearance in EuroLeague, Real Madrid has reportedly decided to part ways with Chus Mateo. Despite winning another Liga Endesa title, Pablo Laso's former assistant could be replaced by Sergio Scariolo.

Chus Mateo, coach of Real Madrid since 2022, is not expected to continue in this position next season. According to Marca and Eurohoops, despite ending the year with an ACB championship, the Spanish coach will leave his position. Italian Sergio Scariolo, former coach of the White House, is reportedly the frontrunner to take over.

A separation despite the titles

Although Chus Mateo had one year left on his contract, Real Madrid has reportedly decided to end their collaboration after a mixed season. While the Madrid club easily won the Liga Endesa final (3-0 against Valencia), they failed to qualify for the EuroLeague Final Four, a notable setback for a club of this stature. This lack of European success appears to have been a decisive factor.

Since taking over in 2022, replacing Pablo Laso, Chus Mateo has won six trophies, including the 2023 EuroLeague. However, this wasn’t enough to convince management to continue the partnership.

« He has been informed that he won’t continue, despite his contract running until 2026, » reports Spanish journalist Noelia Gómez.

A possible return for Scariolo

Real Madrid could turn to a well-known figure to begin a new cycle: Sergio Scariolo. According to Marca, the Italian coach, who was with Real between 1999 and 2002 (with Chus Mateo as his assistant at the time), is the favorite to take over the Madrid bench, as long anticipated.

This coaching change would be part of a broader movement. Sergio Rodríguez, who just retired, is expected to take a key role in the club’s sports management. Additionally, several members of Mateo’s staff, including Paco Redondo, are also reported to be leaving.

Real Madrid is thus preparing to write a new chapter, potentially with a Scariolo-Rodríguez duo leading the basketball section from the 2025-2026 season.
