Player Profile
When Wendell Carter Jr. turned down an offer from Harvard to join Duke, he sent a clear message: academic and athletic excellence can coexist at the highest level. With a 3.8 GPA at Pace Academy in Atlanta, this versatile big man proved that success on the court does not come at the expense of success in the classroom.
Ranked as the fourth overall prospect and top big man in his 2017 class, Carter Jr. built a reputation as a natural leader long before reaching the NBA. His dominance with the Georgia Stars and Team CP3 in AAU basketball, culminating in a Co-MVP award at the prestigious Nike EYBL Peach Jam, confirmed his elite status. Multiple state championships in high school and an outstanding run with the USA national teams — including a gold medal at the U17 World Cup where he was named to the All-Tournament team — speak to a winner's mentality that developed early.
His brief but impressive stint at Duke only boosted his stock ahead of being selected seventh overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by Chicago. Traded to Orlando, Carter Jr. found in Florida an environment well suited to the development of his well-rounded modern big-man game. His ability to play both the power forward and center positions makes him a valuable asset for the Magic, who are counting on his versatility and basketball IQ to build their future. At just 25 years old, Carter Jr. has all the ingredients to become a lasting cornerstone of the Florida franchise.
