When Vlatko Cancar lifted the NBA trophy in 2023 with the Denver Nuggets, the journey of the Slovenian player with Bosnian roots perfectly illustrated European perseverance in modern basketball. Born in Koper to parents Ivo and Nevena, this versatile 6'8" forward built his determination through leagues across the Old Continent before conquering America.
His professional odyssey began in 2015 with Union Olimpija, a club from his home country, before crossing borders to join Mega Leks in Serbia. It was there, between 2016 and 2018, that Cancar honed his game against formidable competition. Spotted by Denver, who selected him 49th overall in the 2017 draft, he nonetheless continued his European development with San Pablo Burgos in the Liga Endesa.
His arrival in the NBA in 2019 marked a turning point. Alternating between the Nuggets and the Erie BayHawks in the G League, where his offensive numbers blossomed, Cancar developed the versatility that defines his style. Capable of playing both small forward and power forward, he embodies the team-first spirit that Denver's organization holds dear.
A right foot injury in 2022 could have derailed his momentum. But after a lengthy rehabilitation, he savored the NBA title just a few months later. That resilience guided his return to Europe with Olimpia Milano in July 2023, where he reclaimed a leadership role after experiencing the pinnacle of the global game.
