Player Profile
When Patty Mills takes the ball during international competitions, his teammates know they are witnessing a transformation. Nicknamed "FIBA Patty" by his national team partners, the Australian point guard reveals on the world stage a dimension that transcends his club performances.
Born in Canberra, Patrick Sammie Mills carries the heritage of two Aboriginal cultures: Torres Strait Islander through his Muralag ancestry and Aboriginal Australian through his Kokatha and Dauareb-Meriam roots. His mother, a member of the "Stolen Generations", and his great-uncle Eddie Mabo, a celebrated Indigenous land rights activist, shaped his early cultural awareness.
Basketball naturally became part of his family life. His parents founded a local Indigenous club where he grew up with a ball in his hands, before becoming a ball boy for the Canberra Cannons. Despite promising opportunities in Australian football, Mills definitively chose basketball, following in the footsteps of his uncle Danny Morseu, also an Olympic basketball player.
After his time at the Australian Institute of Sport and Lake Ginninderra College, he crossed the Pacific to join Saint Mary's College in California. This two-year college experience shaped his tactical maturity and his understanding of the modern game.
By becoming the second Aboriginal Australian and the first player of Torres Strait Islander descent in the NBA, Mills broke down historical barriers. His teammates and observers unanimously recognize his leadership qualities and his commitment to promoting Indigenous Australian athletes. His influence extends well beyond the court, inspiring a generation of young Aboriginal talents to believe in their sporting dreams.
