La Laguna Tenerife showcased their depth and quality this Sunday, overwhelming Casademont Zaragoza 99-76 in a contest that the Canary Islands team dominated from the opening minutes. The home side’s balanced attack, featuring strong contributions both inside and outside the arc, proved decisive against an irregular visiting team.

The victory was built on exceptional team basketball, with key performances from Scrubb early on, followed by impactful displays from Fitipaldo, Gio Shermadini, and veteran Marcelinho Huertas. The game also marked the highly anticipated home debut of new signing Patty Mills, adding another dimension to Tenerife’s already potent roster.

Early dominance sets the tone

Despite Santi Yusta opening the scoring for Zaragoza, Tenerife quickly established control through the first two quarters with superior offensive execution and intense defensive work. Scrubb found his shooting rhythm immediately, contributing seven of his team’s first nine points to establish an early 9-2 advantage by the fourth minute.

Joan Plaza’s rotations provided a brief spark for the visitors, with Wright-Foreman emerging as a threat and Washington joining the offensive effort. However, Tenerife maintained their composure and distance, never allowing Zaragoza to mount a serious challenge despite cutting the deficit to 24-10 by the ninth minute.

The second quarter saw Tenerife maintain their dominance with different protagonists stepping up. Fitipaldo contributed eleven points while Shermadini capitalized on his opportunities inside, keeping their team’s advantage above eight points throughout the period. Although Zaragoza found some success through Miguel González in the paint and managed to close within five points (38-33 at the 15-minute mark), Shermadini‘s consistency and Fitipaldo‘s accuracy, capped by a crucial Huertas 3-pointer, extended the halftime lead to fifteen points (53-38).

Decisive third quarter seals victory

Casademont Zaragoza struggled to find their rhythm in the crucial third quarter opening minutes, where Tenerife reached maximum advantages. A Huertas 3-pointer pushed the lead to 21 points (63-42), and despite Zaragoza’s attempts through outside shooting, the hosts never allowed a genuine comeback threat.

Two 3-points from Washington and a Robinson basket briefly cut the deficit to 63-55 by the 27th minute, but Tenerife’s defensive intensity and Zaragoza’s lack of continuity maintained the comfortable margin heading into the final period.

The final statistics reflected Tenerife’s balanced attack: Huertas led with 20 points, Fitipaldo added 18, Shermadini contributed 15, and debutant Mills chipped in 12 points. For Zaragoza, Wright-Foreman’s 15 points and Washington’s 11 were the bright spots in an otherwise disappointing offensive display.

The victory was celebrated by 5,100 spectators at the Santiago Martín arena, where Tim Abromaitis was honored for holding the record for most games played with CB Canarias, receiving his trophy from former club player Jaime Heras.
