Player Profile
Few players can claim to have led their university to the top of American college basketball while managing a rare heart condition. Jared Butler is one of those remarkable exceptions.
Originally from Reserve, Louisiana, Butler showed early signs of his exceptional talent by joining the varsity team as early as eighth grade at Riverside Academy. His rapid development led to impressive statistics in his final year of high school: 27.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game, earning him the Player of the Year award from The Times-Picayune.
Initially committed to Alabama, the point guard ultimately chose Baylor — a decision that would prove pivotal for his career. It was there that he built his reputation as a leader and big-game player, culminating in Baylor's first NCAA championship in program history in 2021. His clutch performances during the Final Four confirmed his status as an exceptional player.
Alongside his on-court achievements, Butler has had to manage a diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a rare genetic heart condition. Although asymptomatic, this condition adds a particular dimension to his professional journey. Selected 40th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft by New Orleans and then traded to Utah, he has since played for several franchises and in the G League.
His perseverance was recently rewarded with the signing of a standard contract with the Philadelphia 76ers in February 2025, marking a new step in his pursuit of stability at the highest level.
