Player Profile

When Dwight Powell collapsed on the Dallas court in January 2020 with a ruptured Achilles tendon, many believed his NBA career was over. Yet the Canadian big man turned that ordeal into a display of character, coming back stronger than ever in a Mavericks uniform.

Born in Toronto to a Canadian father and a Jamaican mother, Powell carved his path to the top by joining the prestigious IMG Academy in Florida. His impressive stats — 23.2 points and 11.6 rebounds per game in his final year — earned him a spot at Stanford, where he excelled both on the court and in the classroom. The power forward helped the Cardinal win the NIT and return to March Madness after a long absence, while also earning the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Selected 45th overall in the 2014 Draft by Charlotte, Powell had a whirlwind start to his career with brief stints in Boston before finding his basketball home in Dallas in December 2014. It was there that he developed his versatile game, able to play both power forward and center, becoming a key cog in the Mavericks' offense.

Beyond his individual performances, Powell embodies commitment on and off the court. A bronze medalist with the Canadian national team at the 2015 FIBA AmeriCup, he also dedicates his free time to charitable work and social justice advocacy. His resilience in the face of adversity and his community devotion make him far more than just a professional basketball player.
