The Orlando Magic were fined $25,000 by the NBA for violating injury reporting rules ahead of Monday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons. Guard Anthony Black, initially listed as out on the first report, ultimately made his return to the court after a 15-game absence.
The Florida franchise had first listed Black as unavailable due to a left lateral abdominal strain in the 1:45 PM report, ahead of the 7:00 PM game. His status then changed to « questionable » and then « probable » at 3:15 PM the same day, before the Magic confirmed two hours later that he was available to play.
A Successful Return Despite the Administrative Controversy
Anthony Black made an impressive return, coming off the bench to contribute 14 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals in 15 minutes during the Magic’s 123-107 victory over Detroit. It was his first game since March 7, when he sustained the abdominal injury that forced him to miss the following 16 games.
In its statement announcing the fine on Thursday, the NBA noted that the Magic had « failed to accurately disclose Black’s availability status for the game. » The penalty highlights the strict enforcement of the league’s injury reporting transparency rules, which are essential to the integrity of the sport.
Black, a third-year player out of Arkansas, is having a breakout season averaging 15.1 points and 3.8 assists over 62 games, including 40 starts. His return comes at the perfect time for the Magic, currently the 7th seed in the East, who have won four straight and still have a chance to avoid the play-in tournament by closing a half-game gap on the Toronto Raptors in their final two regular season games against Chicago and Boston.
