Wembanyama dominates with 38 points as Spurs defeat Pistons 121-106

The San Antonio Spurs continued their red-hot streak with a commanding 121-106 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night, powered by another spectacular performance from Victor Wembanyama. The French sensation recorded 38 points, 16 rebounds, and five blocks, never allowing his team to trail in what could have been a preview of the NBA Finals.

San Antonio has now won 13 of their last 14 games and completed a season sweep of Detroit, having previously defeated the Pistons 114-103 on February 23rd in Detroit. The Spurs remain second in the Western Conference at 45-17, while the Pistons dropped to 45-16 but maintained their position atop the Eastern Conference despite the loss.

Early dominance sets the tone

The Spurs wasted no time establishing control in their first home game since February 7th, following a nearly month-long road trip. San Antonio jumped to a 10-2 lead and extended their advantage to 17 points in the opening quarter, shooting an impressive 54% from 3-point range. The team finished 13 for 37 on 3-pointers, with Wembanyama contributing 4 for 10 from beyond the arc while playing before 30 of his countrymen who traveled from France to attend the six-game homestand.

Detroit’s night was complicated early when Ausar Thompson suffered a right ankle sprain just two minutes into the game while attacking downhill against Stephon Castle. Thompson, who had been averaging 13.5 points, 5.3 assists, and 2.8 steals over his last four games, did not return despite being listed as questionable.

« Ausar means a lot to us, » said Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff. « What he is able to do defensively and the impact that he has, you missed. We just had to figure out a way to pick it up collectively. I thought we did it at times. But again, when you allow them to score 38 points to start the game, it is not going to be an easy night. »

De’Aaron Fox provided excellent support for Wembanyama with 29 points, while Stephon Castle contributed 11 points and 12 assists. The duo of Wembanyama and Fox combined for 46 of San Antonio’s 71 first-half points, helping establish a 71-55 halftime lead.

For Detroit, Cade Cunningham led the way with 26 points and eight assists, while Isaiah Stewart added 18 points. The Pistons shot better from 3-point range at 42.9% (12 for 28), but their slow defensive start proved costly as they never cut the deficit to fewer than nine points in the second half.
