What appeared to be a blowout turned into one of the most dramatic games of the EuroLeague season at the Allianz Cloud in Milan. FC Barcelone, trailing by as many as 27 points, staged a remarkable comeback that brought them within striking distance of forcing overtime, but ultimately fell short in a heartbreaking defeat that extends their losing streak to three games.

A tale of two halves in Milan

The game seemed over early as Olimpia Milan dominated the opening periods, building what appeared to be an insurmountable 27-point lead. However, Barcelona showed tremendous character in the second half, chipping away at the deficit with relentless determination.

The comeback reached its crescendo when the Catalan side pulled within just two points of their Italian hosts. In a moment that would have completed one of the greatest comebacks in recent EuroLeague memory, Barcelona had a 3-point attempt to force overtime, but the shot failed to find its mark.

Pascual’s Barcelona continues to struggle

This latest defeat represents the third consecutive loss for Xavi Pascual’s Barcelona, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing the Spanish powerhouse. Currently sitting in eighth place in the EuroLeague standings with 17 wins and 12 defeats, Barcelona finds themselves in the Play-In position rather than securing direct playoff qualification.

The team had entered this matchup looking to bounce back from recent disappointments, including their semifinal exit from the Copa del Rey against Baskonia (67-70) and an 85-80 loss to Virtus Bologna in EuroLeague play. Despite having recovered key players Kevin Punter, Tomas Satoransky, and Jan Vesely from injury, Barcelona continues to search for consistency under Pascual’s guidance.

Punter, who had returned in spectacular fashion with 27 points against Virtus Bologna after missing the Copa del Rey, was expected to lead Barcelona’s charge in Milan. However, the team’s inability to close out this remarkable comeback attempt will undoubtedly sting as they fight for playoff positioning.

With the regular season entering its final stretch, Barcelona desperately needs to find their winning formula to secure a top-six finish and avoid the uncertainty of the Play-In tournament. This defeat, despite the valiant comeback effort, represents another missed opportunity in their quest to return to championship contention.
