The San Antonio Spurs received encouraging news regarding Victor Wembanyama‘s injury status after the French phenom underwent testing Tuesday following his early exit from Monday’s victory over Philadelphia. What initially appeared to be a potentially season-ending setback has been diagnosed as a rib contusion with no major structural damage.

Wembanyama suffered the injury during a collision with 76ers forward Paul George in the second quarter of Monday’s game. After playing just 15 minutes and 40 seconds, he was ruled out for the remainder of the contest, leaving Spurs fans and the organization holding their breath about the severity of the injury.

Award eligibility remains intact despite Wednesday absence

The timing of Wembanyama’s injury carries significant implications beyond just team success. As the favorite to win NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a strong contender for MVP, the 2.18m center needs to meet specific playing time requirements to maintain eligibility for postseason awards.

Because Wembanyama played fewer than 20 minutes in Monday’s game, that contest will not count toward his award eligibility. However, according to ESPN‘s Shams Charania, there is confidence that he will return during the regular season to meet the necessary requirements. The Spurs have three remaining games – Wednesday against Portland, followed by home contests against Dallas and Denver on Friday and Sunday.

« I’m told the Spurs are not anticipating this to be a major injury, » Charania reported. « He underwent X-Rays last night, on that rib, and X-Rays for Victor Wembanyama that returned negative, I am told. »

While Wembanyama is listed as doubtful for Wednesday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers, the negative X-ray results suggest he could return as early as Friday’s matchup with the Mavericks. The focus now shifts to pain management and ensuring he doesn’t take unnecessary risks with the playoffs approaching.

This season, Wembanyama has posted averages of 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game while shooting 51.0% from the field and 35.0% from 3-point range. His dominant two-way play has been instrumental in San Antonio‘s remarkable 60-19 record.

The Spurs still maintain an outside chance of catching the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Western Conference’s top seed, though they would need the Thunder to lose at least three of their final four games. Regardless of seeding, having Wembanyama healthy for the playoffs remains the organization’s primary concern as they prepare for their first postseason appearance in years.
