The San Antonio Spurs are holding their breath after Victor Wembanyama was injured during a 115-102 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night. The 7-foot-4 French center suffered a left rib contusion following a collision with Paul George and was unable to play in the second half.
The incident occurred with 10 minutes and 47 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Wembanyama was sprinting on a fast break when Paul George attempted to intercept a pass intended for the Frenchman. The accidental contact between the two players resulted in a left rib contusion for « The Alien, » who immediately left the court holding his side.

A Race Against the Clock for Awards Eligibility
Despite his early exit, Wembanyama tallied 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks in just 15 minutes and 40 seconds of play. This performance is part of an exceptional streak of three consecutive games with at least 30 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks, tying the second-longest such streak since 1973-74.
The injury comes at a critical moment for the 22-year-old, who is the frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year and a serious MVP candidate. Having played 63 games this season, he needs to play at least 20 minutes in one of San Antonio‘s final three games to maintain his eligibility for end-of-season awards.
The NBA allows a maximum of two exceptions where a player can play between 15 and 20 minutes to reach the required minimum of 65 games. Wembanyama’s playing time against the 76ers counts as one of those valuable exceptions.
Head coach Mitch Johnson had no additional information on his star’s condition at the post-game press conference. San Antonio (59-19) closes out its regular season with four home games before playing its first playoffs since 2019. Wembanyama currently leads his team with averages of 24.9 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game.
