The race for the NBA Most Valuable Player title enters its decisive phase with only about ten games remaining in the regular season. For the eighth consecutive season, the winner will very likely be a foreign-born player, confirming the league’s growing internationalization.

The 65-game minimum rule for individual award eligibility is once again being debated, particularly after Cade Cunningham of the Detroit Pistons suffered a lung injury. The NBA Players Association has sharply criticized this rule, emphasizing that it deprives elite players of these distinctions which can have a considerable financial impact on their future contracts.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Still Leading Despite Pressure

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander maintains the top spot in this MVP ranking. With his 31.5 points per game average, the Canadian guard ranks only behind Luka Doncic in scoring. His impressive consistency remains his major asset, even though the gap with his pursuers has narrowed in recent weeks.

Victor Wembanyama occupies second spot and continues to improve. Since early February, no team has been more successful than San Antonio, carried by the French center. His impact on both ends of the floor is historic, and most impressively, he keeps getting better. His current period is the most efficient of his career, with growing confidence and charisma.

Luka Dončić completes the podium after his recent offensive explosion. His 40.6 points average over his last eight games, including a 60-point performance against Miami on March 19, demonstrates his offensive dominance. The Lakers are also excelling, beating several top-level teams.

Nikola Jokic (27.8 points, 12.8 rebounds, 10.8 assists) maintains his triple-double average and cannot miss more than one game to remain eligible. Jaylen Brown rounds out this top 5, carrying his team in Jayson Tatum’s absence with 32.6 points average over his last five outings.
