Victor Wembanyama isn’t hiding his championship aspirations anymore. Following the San Antonio Spurs‘ dominant 136-111 victory over the Miami Heat, the 2.24m center made his MVP intentions crystal clear. The win marked another milestone in the Spurs‘ incredible run, securing their 22nd victory in the past 24 games and clinching their first Southwest Division title since 2014.
« I have thought about it, » Wembanyama said after the victory. « I think right now, there is a debate. There should be, even though I think I should lead the race. I’m trying to make sure that at the end of the season, there’s no debate. »
Historic Statistical Company
The French phenom’s numbers speak volumes about his impact. Averaging 24.3 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 blocked shots, Wembanyama finds himself in exclusive company. Only six players in NBA history have achieved such statistical benchmarks: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar accomplished it five times, Hakeem Olajuwon twice, while Shaquille O’Neal, Patrick Ewing and David Robinson each did it once. Remarkably, Wembanyama already reached these numbers last season in just 46 games.
Currently holding the third-best MVP odds, Wembanyama trails reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic, the league’s leading scorer. However, the 65-game eligibility rule could become crucial, as Wembanyama can afford to miss only three more games with 10 regular-season contests remaining.
Wembanyama presents a compelling three-part argument for his candidacy. « My first one would be that defense is 50% of the game and that it is undervalued so far in the MVP race. I believe I’m the most impactful player defensively in the league, » he explained. « Second argument would be that we almost swept OKC in the season, and we dominated them three times with their real team. … The third argument would be that offense impact is not just points. »
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson strongly supports his star player’s case. « He affects as much of the game in every single way — on the court, on both ends, with and without the ball, what the other team tries to do, plan for, scheme, adjust to, on both sides of the basketball, in my very ignorant opinion — as much as any other player I’ve ever seen, » Johnson stated.
With San Antonio sitting at 54-18 and positioned as the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, Wembanyama’s impact extends beyond individual statistics. « Right now, it is still reasonable that there is a debate, » he concluded. « But as I said, my goal is to make sure there’s no debate anymore at the end of the season. »
