The Cleveland Cavaliers proved they could compete without their star player, overcoming the absence of Donovan Mitchell to defeat the conference-leading Detroit Pistons 113-109 at home. The victory showcased the team’s depth and resilience as they split their four regular-season meetings with Detroit.

Jaylon Tyson stepped up in Mitchell’s absence, leading all Cleveland scorers with 22 points. James Harden and Evan Mobley each contributed 18 points, while Dennis Schroder added 15 to round out a balanced offensive attack. The performance was particularly impressive given that Mitchell has now missed four consecutive games with a nagging groin strain.

Pistons’ road streak ends despite strong individual performances

Detroit‘s six-game road winning streak came to an end despite solid individual efforts. Jalen Duren dominated the paint with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while Tobias Harris scored 19 points, all coming after halftime. However, star guard Cade Cunningham struggled offensively, managing just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting, though he did contribute 14 assists.

Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson revealed the defensive strategy that limited Cunningham: « Just throw bodies at him, try to wear him down, contest everything and try to keep him off the free throw line. » The approach proved effective in neutralizing one of the conference’s most dynamic players.

The game remained competitive throughout, with Detroit cutting an 11-point deficit to just one point in the fourth quarter. However, Sam Merrill hit a crucial 3-pointer to help the Cavaliers maintain their advantage and secure the victory.

Injury concerns and playoff implications

The victory came with some concerns for Cleveland, as center Jarrett Allen suffered a knee injury in the third quarter and did not return. Allen, who has been having one of the best stretches of his career, remained optimistic about his condition, saying « I’ll be all right » when asked about the injury.

Coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged Mitchell’s progress, stating the seven-time All-Star is « trending better » but couldn’t provide a timeline for his return. The uncertainty surrounding Mitchell’s availability adds urgency to building chemistry with newly acquired James Harden before the postseason begins.

Despite the loss, Detroit maintained their comfortable lead atop the conference with a 45-15 record, sitting 4½ games ahead of the second-placed Boston Celtics. Cleveland improved to 39-24, holding fourth place in the conference standings as both teams prepare for what promises to be an intriguing playoff race.
