A loyalty choice despite an attractive market
This extension marks a critical agreement between the Timberwolves and Reid’s agents, Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports. The player could have explored the free agent market, where several teams offered similar amounts with starting roles. However, Reid preferred the stability and sporting project of Minnesota.
Winner of the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2023-2024, Reid had another solid season coming off the bench for the Timberwolves. He posted career averages of 14.2 points and 6.0 rebounds in 27 minutes per game. When he played as a starter in 17 games, his statistics rose to 18.3 points and 9.0 rebounds on average.
Reid has established himself as a crucial element of a Timberwolves team that reached the Western Conference finals in the last two seasons. His ability to stretch the floor with his 3-point shooting makes him a valuable asset. He is one of only three forward/center players to attempt at least 5.8 three-pointers per game last season, alongside Kristaps Porzingis and Victor Wembanyama, with a 39.5% success rate from long range over the past two seasons.
Essential continuity for the Wolves’ ambitions
This extension represents excellent news for a franchise that risked losing several important players this summer. Keeping Reid allows the Timberwolves to maintain quality bench depth while pursuing their goal of surrounding their superstar Anthony Edwards with a roster capable of competing for the title.
Reid, who joined Minnesota in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of LSU, has spent all six of his NBA seasons with the Timberwolves. He is one of only three players to have scored more than 2000 points off the bench over the last three seasons, confirming his status as an elite sixth man.
