On Wednesday evening, the fifth and penultimate round of La Boulangère Wonderligue playdowns made its verdict: Chartres, promoted last summer, goes back down to LF2. CCBF’s victory against La Roche Vendée (74-67) wasn’t enough to save the club. Landerneau, by winning against Villeneuve d’Ascq (75-73), secured its spot in the elite division, as did RVBC.

Landerneau wins thriller, Chartres falls short despite victory

The evening’s scenario left multiple outcomes possible. Chartres needed to win against La Roche by more than 15 points to have a chance of moving ahead on point difference. Despite a strong performance and a 74-67 win, the Bluelights remain behind the Vendée team and are officially relegated to LF2, just one year after promotion.

Meanwhile, Landerneau controlled their own destiny. Against an undefeated Villeneuve d’Ascq in playdowns, the Wolves had to fight until the end to secure their spot. At La Cimenterie, LBB delivered an intense performance, winning 75-73 thanks to a strong game from Nausia Woolfolk and a crucial block by Evelyn Akhator in the final seconds.

« The essential is secured, even if we were shaky when we had control of the game. We stayed in it thanks to our defense, » coach Wani Muganguzi told Ouest-France after the game.

With this win, the Finistère team can’t be caught by Chartres, even if they lose the last game. Same for La Roche Vendée, who benefits from Chartres’ insufficient margin to also maintain their position.

A meaningless sixth round?

The final playdown round, scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, will have no impact on standings. Already-safe Villeneuve d’Ascq and newly-secured La Roche Vendée will play for pride. Landerneau can finish these playdowns stress-free, while Chartres will play their last game at this level before returning to LF2, hoping to end on a positive note.
