Kevin Durant extends with Rockets and sets NBA earnings record

Kevin Durant has confirmed his long-term commitment to the Houston Rockets. The All-Star forward signed a two-year extension worth $90 million. The contract includes a player option for the 2027-2028 season, his agent Rich Kleiman told ESPN.
With this signing, Durant becomes the highest-paid player in NBA history. He now totals $598.2 million in career earnings, surpassing LeBron James and his $583.9 million.

A gesture to help the Rockets
Durant voluntarily accepted a lower salary to help his team. He could have gotten up to $120 million over two years but chose to reduce this amount by about $30 million. This gesture allows the Rockets to maintain more flexibility to build a competitive team.
« He knew that by joining Houston, he would make a financial sacrifice for the good of the team, » Kleiman explained to ESPN.
Arriving in July in a seven-team trade involving the Phoenix Suns, Durant joins a promising young core with Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson. This extension reinforces the Rockets’ ambitions, who finished second in the Western Conference last season.
At 37, Durant remains an elite scorer. He averaged 26.6 points, 6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists last season. With this new three-year contract totaling $144.7 million, he can now focus on a single goal: winning the title with Houston. The Rockets’ season starts Tuesday against the Thunder, the reigning champions.
