Portland bets 82 million on a 25-year-old Belgian drafted 52nd: Toumani Camara

Toumani Camara and the Portland Trail Blazers have reached an agreement on a four-year, $82 million extension, according to his agent Dave Putterie, as reported by ESPN on Sunday. The 25-year-old Belgian is now tied to the franchise until 2030.
A rapid rise since the 2023 draft
Selected 52nd overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2023 Draft, Camara joined Portland in the trade that sent Damian Lillard to Milwaukee and Deandre Ayton to the Blazers. Since then, the 6’7″ forward has established himself as a cornerstone on both ends of the floor.
Last season, he averaged 11.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, shooting 45.8% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range. His performances earned him a spot on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team, the first Trail Blazer to achieve this since Theo Ratliff in 2004.

A rare defensive force
Camara ranked ninth in the NBA in steals and was one of only seven players to exceed 100 steals and 50 blocks in the season. He also drew 91 offensive fouls, the second-highest total since tracking began in 2013.
A favorable contract for Portland
This extension, slightly below the maximum possible ($87 million), leaves salary cap flexibility for the Blazers. The agreement replaces the team option planned for 2026-2027 and secures Camara’s place in the young core alongside Scoot Henderson, Shaeden Sharpe, Donovan Clingan, and Deni Avdija.
