Jonathan Kuminga immediately made an impact in his first game wearing the Atlanta Hawks jersey. The Congolese forward, acquired from the Golden State Warriors at the trade deadline, delivered a remarkable performance with 27 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in just 24 minutes of play during the dominant 119-98 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday night.

Sidelined since January 22 due to a bone bruise in his left knee, Kuminga quickly found his rhythm. Entering the game during the first quarter, he immediately energized State Farm Arena with a powerful fast-break dunk, displaying a wide smile as he ran back down the court.

An immediate impact that recalls his potential

« It was great, » Kuminga said after the game. « I was excited to be on the court with the guys. » The 23-year-old showed remarkable efficiency with 9 makes on 12 field goal attempts, including 3 of 4 from three-point range, matching his season high.

Coach Quin Snyder praised his new acquisition: « He connected with his teammates and let the game come to him. » Kuminga benefited from more playing time than expected after Jalen Johnson‘s early exit due to hip flexor tightness in the first quarter.

This performance contrasts sharply with the difficult end to his time with the Warriors, where he had fallen out of favor with Steve Kerr and had even requested a trade due to his diminished playing time. Selected 7th overall in the 2021 draft, Kuminga had only played in 7 of his final 38 games with Golden State.

The evening was also marked by Trae Young‘s return to Atlanta, now a Wizard but still injured. The former Hawks point guard received a heartfelt tribute from his former fans during a video shown in the second quarter. The two teams will meet again on Thursday for the rematch, giving Kuminga the opportunity to build on this promising debut in Georgia.
