Jonathan Kuminga didn’t have time to confirm his return to form. The Golden State Warriors forward left the game against the Dallas Mavericks early on Thursday night, after twisting his left ankle and hyperextending his left knee during a drive in the second quarter.
The injury occurred during an awkward landing on Brandon Williams’ foot while driving to the basket. Kuminga immediately felt discomfort in his ankle and knee, forcing him to ask out after trying to stay on the court for a few possessions.
Before the injury, the 6’7″ forward was having an excellent start to the game with 10 points in just 9 minutes, posting a +18 differential for his team. He had made all his shot attempts and helped the Warriors in their first-half comeback.
According to ESPN sources, initial examinations revealed no serious injury, although Kuminga indicated after the game that the knee was bothering him more than the ankle. An MRI could be scheduled depending on his condition Friday morning.
This injury comes at a crucial moment for Kuminga, who had just regained playing time after 16 consecutive games without playing. His return to the rotation Tuesday night resulted in a notable performance of 20 points in 21 minutes off the bench.
Stephen Curry praised his teammate’s attitude: « He did exactly what he needed to do. Pick his moments to attack, make quick and smart decisions, find the open man. If he has a one-on-one situation with space, score the basket. It’s a tribute to his preparation. »
Two weeks before the trade deadline, this injury further complicates the situation for the Warriors, already without Jimmy Butler for the rest of the season following his torn ACL. The team is on a two-game losing streak since the announcement of Butler’s injury, now holding a record of 25 wins and 21 losses.
