The Boston Celtics are officially qualified for the 2026 playoffs. Thanks to their convincing 114-99 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday, the Massachusetts franchise extends their consecutive qualification streak to twelve seasons, the longest active streak in the NBA.
This qualification comes under unusual circumstances, as many predicted a difficult season for Boston after Jayson Tatum’s Achilles tendon rupture during last year’s playoffs and the departures of key veterans like Jrue Holiday, Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis during the offseason.
Tatum Finally Returns to Peak Offensive Form
In the absence of injured Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum delivered his best performance since returning to the court in March. The 26-year-old forward scored 32 points on 12/23 shooting including 5/10 from three-point range, adding 5 rebounds and 8 assists in 31 minutes of play.
« I didn’t feel rushed, » Tatum told reporters after the game. « I was still a bit tired, so that’s something I’m still working on. But I like being decisive in my movements and exploding when I need to. Obviously, it helps when your shots are falling. I can say I feel better than I did in the last game. »
This performance marks a turning point for Tatum, who had shown signs of frustration regarding his shooting since his return. The Duke product particularly impressed with his offensive variety, connecting on off-balance shots, drives and even a spectacular two-handed dunk.
Brown Mocks Skeptics After Successful « Transition » Season
Jaylen Brown, absent for this decisive game, didn’t miss the opportunity to call out critics on social media after the qualification. « 50 wins in a transition year, » wrote the Celtics star, referencing the many doubts expressed at the start of the season.
The 29-year-old guard carried the team during Tatum’s absence, establishing himself as a serious MVP candidate with career averages of 28.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game. Under Joe Mazzulla’s leadership, Boston also boasts the league’s best defense, allowing only 107.0 points per game.
With Tatum’s return to form, the Celtics have posted a 9-2 record since their leader’s comeback. This fifth consecutive 50-win season positions Boston strongly for the playoffs, currently second in the Eastern Conference behind the Detroit Pistons.
