A versatile profile to complete the Sixers rotation
Selected 57th overall in the 2022 draft by Portland, Walker played 188 games in a Blazers uniform, including 24 as a starter. Over his three seasons in Oregon, he averaged 6.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game.
His most notable improvement has been his three-point shooting. After shooting 29.2% in his first two seasons, he made a spectacular jump this season with 38.9% accuracy. This improvement also came with better offensive efficiency, shooting 51.5% from the field. All this despite reduced playing time of 12.5 minutes per game.
His decreased playing time was due to the arrival of Deni Avdija and emergence of Toumani Camara in the Blazers’ rotation. Portland had a logjam at the forward position with Jerami Grant, Kris Murray, and Rayan Rupert. This limited opportunities for the son of former NBA player Samaki Walker.
An opportunity seized by Philadelphia
The Trail Blazers chose not to extend a qualifying offer of $2.58 million to Walker, making him an unrestricted free agent. This decision allowed the Sixers to acquire an experienced player on a favorable contract.
Walker will occupy Philadelphia’s third and final two-way slot, alongside Alex Reese and rookie Hunter Sallis. This type of contract will allow him to be active for a maximum of 50 regular season NBA games, alternating between the main team and the Delaware Blue Coats in the G-League.
Capable of playing both the 3 and 4 positions, Walker brings his physical presence and versatility to a Sixers roster focusing on youth. Turning 23 next month, he represents a great opportunity for Philadelphia to develop a talent who has already proven his ability to contribute in an NBA rotation.
