The Ja Morant saga takes an unexpected turn. While the Memphis Grizzlies are actively exploring trade possibilities for their star, the point guard has just acquired a luxurious $3.2 million property in Miami, according to Miami-Dade County records reviewed by the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The transaction, finalized on December 23, 2025 through the Temetrius Morant Trust, places the 26-year-old player just 6 kilometers from the Kaseya Center, home of the Miami Heat. A coincidence that’s causing talk around the league, especially since this acquisition occurred more than two weeks before trade rumors became public.

Miami in pole position to acquire the Grizzlies star

According to Kelly Iko of Yahoo Sports, the Miami Heat « has become an attractive option » for Ja Morant. The two franchises have even begun « preliminary discussions, » although Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald notes that negotiations « have not yet escalated » and that a deal is not imminent.

Miami’s appeal to Morant goes beyond geography. According to Iko, the two-time All-Star appreciates the Heat’s reputation as a « detail-oriented and structured » organization. Even more revealing, Morant « has deep respect for Heat coach Erik Spoelstra » and hopes to play under him, particularly with an eye toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Morant’s current situation justifies this search for change. Limited to just 18 games out of the Grizzlies’ first 39 this 2025-2026 season, he’s posting declining stats with 19 points and 7.6 assists per game, but only 40.1% shooting and 20.8% from three-point range. A one-game suspension for « conduct detrimental to the team » following an altercation with coach Tuomas Iisalo also marked this difficult campaign.

Asked about trade rumors during the Grizzlies’ European trip, Morant was brief: « I have to live with it. » According to Iko, these speculations have « deeply disappointed Morant and his entourage, » who plan to meet during the European tour to discuss options.

From a financial perspective, Miami has two tradeable draft picks (2030 and 2032), but analyst Zach Lowe believes a package centered around Tyler Herro and Terry Rozier could be sufficient, without requiring those precious picks. Currently eighth in the East with a 21-19 record, the Heat could see Morant as the missing piece for their playoff ambitions.
